The Ringgold Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is currently looking to assist local business owners with aspirations of sprucing up their storefronts by contributing funds to such efforts.

The DDA’s 2013 façade grant program is geared towards doing just that by awarding a 50 percent match in funds to chosen businesses looking for a facelift.

Some politicians don't know how much "We the people" pay for a gallon of milk or bread.  Remember that?  Enter John McCain, who thinks the folks pay too much for cable TV.  Or, at least the number of channels one must buy in a bundle should be offered a-la-cart instead.  This sounds fantastic right? 

But will this effectively lower the price of pay tv?  Common sense says yes. If I only pay for what I watch my bill will go down right?  For example, if I only watch 8 cable TV stations and each is $4 my $80 cable bill should be reduced $48 right?  Uh, not so fast.  

Is two charter study committees too many? Some Fort Oglethorpe officials think so.

City leaders think the state legislature’s decision to form a charter study committee is unnecessary. They want their own committee of registered voters to review the charter.

Mayor Lynn Long compared the legislative delegation’s appointment of a charter review committee to Russians re-writing the U.S. Constitution.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Chattanooga, benefiting Partnership's Rape Crisis Center, called all men to put themselves in “her” shoes — literally — and walk a mile with the Partnership Rape Crisis Center to raise awareness of sexual violence in the greater Chattanooga area. A group of 13 young men and several young women from Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga, including Miss Chickamauga Teen USA, joined other walkers on Saturday, April 27, at Coolidge Park in Chattanooga, to raise funding for the center.

The Chattanooga Zoo is offering free admission to all mothers on Sunday for Mother's Day.  Mothers who visit the Zoo with their children (or grandchildren) will receive free admission to the Zoo between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  

While visiting the Zoo, guests can see other moms like Kasimir the Snow Leopard and Maggie the Cotton-Top Tamarin, taking care of their young, check out an Animal Encounters show at 2 p.m. and take a ride on the endangered species carousel or a camel.

Walker County school officials have announced the district’s selection for Teacher of the Year as Kelly Long.

Long is in his seventh year at Rossville Middle School as an eighth-grade math teacher.

A panel of three retired educators from the Walker County school system selected him from four system finalists including Charity Barton from Chattanooga Valley Middle School, Beth O’Neil from Stone Creek Elementary and Dustin Madaris from LaFayette Middle School.

The Catoosa-Walker Relay for Life was a success, drawing hundreds of visitors out in support of the American Cancer Society on Friday, May 3. Many teams dressed to impress. They offered games, hair designs and face painting as a way to raise money for cancer research that stays in the north Georgia area. 

About 500 people attended the event throughout the night. About 200 cancer survivors were registered and were served dinner under the pavilion. As of Friday evening, Relay for Life collected $40,000, according to event chair Kim Bean.

A little more than a year ago the Lookout Mountain district attorney’s office dropped charges in a 20-year-old murder case, in part because a key witness had died. But the witness, it turns out, is alive and was arrested recently.

Hugh Lonnie Breazeale, 50, of Rossville was arrested by a Catoosa County sheriff’s detective on Thursday, April 25, on several child sex charges. He remains in jail, after being denied bond on four counts of child molestation and one count of aggravated sexual battery.

Georgia governor Nathan Deal made a quick stop by the Walker County civic center Thursday, May 2, to ceremoniously sign two state bills into law. 

Both bills were put forward in their respective houses of government by a local Walker County representative, and both are advantageous for the county.
