Growing wildfires present unique challenges

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — Heavy smoke in Soddy Daisy and Downtown Chattanooga reminds Hamilton County residents that wildfires continue to burn. As of right now the Flipper Bend, Mowbray Mountain, and Poe Road fires have burned a collective 1,600 acres.Earlier this week, the Florida Forestry Service assumed control of firefighting operations at Flipper Bend, Mowbray Mountain, Walden's Ridge, and now Poe Road fires.Tennessee requested the Florida crew assist in the management of growing wildfires due to thoroughly depleted resources from previous fires.

Man shot in the back in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Police say a Chattanooga man is recovering after he was shot in the back Thursday evening. The incident happened just before 6 p.m. in the 3300 block of Pinewood Avenue.Chattanooga Police say officers arrived at a local hospital where the victim, 21-year-old Geonta Gaines, had arrived after being taken in a personal vehicle.

Georgia official says state is ready for Tuesday's election

ATLANTA (AP) — Amid national concerns about the security of U.S. voting systems, Georgia's top elections official said Monday that people should be confident in Georgia's elections system when polls open Tuesday.
