Missing LaFayette man found dead in creek in Dalton

A LaFayette native who was reported missing on Friday was found deceased in a creek not far less than a mile from the apartments where he was living in Dalton.

According to Dalton Police Department's Public Relations Specialist Bruce Frazier, 26-year-old Colin Shropshire was last scene Friday, March 3, at 1 a.m., on foot and leaving an apartment complex called The Cliffs on Shugart Road in Dalton.

Shropshire was listed as still residing in LaFayette.

On Friday, Shropshire was entered into the GCIC missing persons database.

Popular Dalton bike shop to close before holidays; Unable to compete against online retail

DALTON, Ga. — The wheels have been turning at the Bear Creek Bicycle company for almost 10 years. Owner Shane Adams loved running the shop and has ridden through a handful of holiday seasons; This year, will be his last.

"We just can't be competitive," Adams said. "It's impossible for us to be on a level playing field with the internet."

Adams says online retail has a competitive advantage over small businesses, including his own.

Dalton Police arrest church burglary suspect caught on camera

DALTON, Ga. — Dalton Police say they have arrested a man who was caught on surveillance video who broke into a church, stole a computer, and wrote satanic messages on a dry erase board in the Sunday School room.

The burglary happened at the First United Methodist Church at 500 South Thornton Avenue during the early morning hours of November 13th but was not reported to police until November 28th.

Educators to be admitted free to Dalton Ghost Tours’ Haunted Pub Crawl Aug. 5-6

In recognition of the beginning of a new school year, Dalton Ghost Tours will offer free admittance for educators to the Friday, Aug. 5, Haunted Pub Crawl and the Saturday, Aug. 6, ghost walk. Reservations are not required for either event, but can be made by calling 706-275-4416.

Prater’s Mill Country Fair in Dalton set for October 10 and 11

Prater’s Mill Country Fair, slated for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10 and 11, Columbus Day weekend, is a north Georgia tradition.

“Celebrate our 45th year!” said Melanie Millican Chapman, a volunteer at every fair since the beginning. “We started the fair in 1971 to raise funds to restore the mill. Now we’re proud to say we preserve eight historic buildings at the heritage park owned by the people of Whitfield County.”

Dalton State Adds New Business Degree

Dalton State now has 20 bachelor degrees available for students after the Board of Regents approved adding a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Applied Economics on Tuesday.

The degree will prepare students for careers in finance, insurance, real estate, government, law, and business, according to Dr. Andy Meyer, interim vice president for Academic Affairs. Having this degree will also prepare students to fill a need in the Northwest Georgia community.

Shaw Industries Group Inc. plans to spend tens of millions of dollars at a South Carolina carpet fiber plant to increase the use of fiber from recycled plastics.

The world’s largest carpet maker, based in Dalton, Ga., is planning new polyester extrusion operations that will include the use of recycled PET beverage containers. The company also will add nylon fiber capacity.

Production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter at the Lexington County, S.C., plant.

New Walmart in Dalton to hire over 90 associates

Walmart will hire up to 95 associates to work at the new Walmart Neighborhood Market slated to open this fall in Dalton. A temporary hiring center is open in the Walnut Square Mall, 816 Walnut Square Boulevard, Suite #37.

Applications will be accepted Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Interested applicants may also apply online at careers.walmart.com.
