Two long-time Fort Oglethorpe city officials are fighting to get their jobs back. City Council members decided to uphold the interim city manager's firing of the police chief and public works director. Now, those former employees have filed a lawsuit.

City Officials reviewed personnel decisions yesterday made by Interim City Manager, Harold Silcox. On March 22nd, Silcox decided to terminate police chief David Eubanks and Public Works Director, Jeff Long... minutes after being appointed.

The Fort Oglethorpe City Council heard the appeal hearings of former public works director Jeff Long and former police chief David Eubanks on Tuesday night, May 14. In both cases the council upheld the decision by interim city manager Harold Silcox to terminate the longstanding city employees. 

More than 70 people were crammed into the city council chambers to hear the long awaited verdict by mayor and council on whether to uphold Silcox’s decision to fire the two employees on March 22.

The personnel appeal hearings for two fired Fort Oglethorpe officials is set for Tuesday, May 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at city hall.

The hearings, which are open to the public, will presents testimony relevant to the terminations of police chief David Eubanks and public works director Jeff Long. Both were fired in March.

The city council will determine the validity of the decision made by interim city manager Harold Silcox to terminate these employees just minutes after being appointed.

City leaders think the state legislature’s decision to form a charter study committee is unnecessary. They want their own committee of registered voters to review the charter.

Mayor Lynn Long compared the legislative delegation’s appointment of a charter review committee to Russians re-writing the U.S. Constitution.

Appeal hearings have been scheduled and rescheduled — and now rescheduled again — for former public works director Jeff Long and former police chief David Eubanks, who are both opposing their terminations on March 22.

The most recent hearing, set for April 29, has now been cancelled. The date conflicted with an annual county commission convention, which Jeff Long was previously committed for.

Fort Oglethorpe city leaders have rescheduled the appeal hearings for fired police chief David Eubanks and public works director Jeff Long for Monday, April 29.

The hearings will begin with Long’s appeal to interim city manager Harold Silcox’s decision to terminate him and then follow with the same appeal for Eubanks, according to mayor Lynn Long.

Both former employees have retained attorney McCracken Poston to represent them in the hearing. Poston is working with attorney Stuart James from Chattanooga on these matters, he said.

Hutcheson Medical in Fort Oglethorpe considers leasing building to another hospital to pay off debt

The board of directors for Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe and its Hospital Authority announced this week its support of Catoosa and Walker counties’ plans to back financing with a bond for restructuring and consolidating long-term debt from the previous administrations.

As part of the agreement, the counties asked Hutcheson to explore alternative long-term financing strategies, including leasing Hutcheson to another hospital, as a way to minimize taxpayer risk.

Smartphone app to draw visitors to Battle of Chickamauga anniversary

One of the biggest events coming to northwest Georgia is just around the corner, in both location and time.

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga takes place Sept. 20-22. More than 10,000 re-enactors will be simulating the clash of Union and Confederate armies in 1863 in McLemore’s Cove in Walker County.

Fort Oglethorpe’s tourism board is hoping to reap some of the benefits of visitors to the area, due to the city’s close proximity to the reenactment.

Appeal hearings for former Fort Oglethorpe police chief David Eubanks and former public works director Jeff Long have been postponed due to a scheduling conflict.

A news release today from the city states: “Attorneys for David Eubanks and Jeffrey Long, presented to counsel for the city of Fort Oglethorpe, a notice of conflict whereby they were unable to resolve a conflict in appearances between a criminal court in Cleveland, Tennessee, and an oral argument before another court.”

Appeal hearings April 22 for fired Fort Oglethorpe officials

The city of Fort Oglethorpe has canceled its next council meeting in preparation for two appeal hearings scheduled for Monday, April 22. The hearings are open to the public.

Former police chief David Eubanks and former public works director Jeff Long are appealing their firings. Both were fired March 22.

Both hired Ringgold attorney McCracken Poston.

Long’s appeal will take place at 10 a.m. in the city council meeting room at city hall. Eubanks’ appeal will be heard in the same location at 1 p.m.
